How Does Femara Treat Infertility?

Femara – generic name Letrozole – is an ovary stimulation medication providing a less invasive, less expensive drug therapy for women undergoing fertility treatment. Treatment with Femara has a lower risk of multiple pregnancy. According to the National Institutes of Health, studies have shown Femara to be more effective in treating women suffering from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) than Clomid(clomiphene/serophene). Femara is an aromatase inhibitor.

Femara for Treating Infertility

PCOS affects 5 to 10 percent of women during their prime reproductive years. PCOS is one of the most common causes of female infertility. PCOS is a medical condition in which the ovaries enlarge and develop multiple cyst. These cysts are immature ovarian follicles.

Women suffering from PCOS may produce excess male hormones interfering with their regular ovulation.

Symptoms of PCOS

Ovulation interference is only one symptom of PCOS. Other signs are:

  • Infertility
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Excessive body and facial hair
  • Acne
  • Obesity

Women with PCOS can also suffer from insulin resistance. This is a pre-diabetic condition in which high levels of are produce to maintain normal blood glucose levels.

Treating Infertility With Femara

Women treated with Femara are more likely to ovulate and achieve a successful pregnancy resulting in a live birth than are those treated with Clomid.

A woman under 35 can expect an approximate 15 percent increase in her chance of getting pregnant each month using Femara. Femara is not effective for women suffering from blocked fallopian tubes or problems with the shape of her uterus. These conditions prevent the implantation of a fertilized eggs in the uterine lining and must be ruled out with accurate diagnostic testing.
