Sonohysterogram vs Hysterosalpingogram

Dr. Randy Morris

Sonohysterogram (also known as sonohysterogram or saline ultrasound) is a procedure used primarily to visualize the uterus. Hysterosalpinogram is a procedure to used to visualize the uterus and fallopian tubes. Depending on your condition, your doctor may use one or both of these procedures to diagnose your infertility.

About Sonohysterogram

During a sonohysterogram, a catheter is inserted through the cervical canal into the uterine cavity. Then, the catheter is held in place by inflating a balloon at the tip. The doctor injects fluid through the catheter into the uterine cavity, and then ultrasound is used to visualize the uterus. The fluid may either be saline or a special fluid which is designed to show up well on an ultrasound. It is rare for women to experience complications after a sonohysterogram. However, it is possible for issues like infection, bleeding, uterine cramps, or tissue trauma to occur.Sonohysterograms are more effective than a typical transvaginal ultrasound at allowing doctors to evaluate the uterus for abnormalities. Some abnormalities that may be detected during this procedure include:

  • Polyps, or small benign growths in the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Scar tissue from past trauma, such as a D&C
  • Uterine abnormalities such as bicornate uterus or uterine septum

About Hysterosalpingogram

A hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a standard x-ray study of the uterus. The procedure is valuable for getting a basic idea of whether or not there are problems with the inside of the uterus or the fallopian tubes. To get the best results, HSG sould be performed soon after a woman's menstrual period has ended and before ovulation has occurred because the uterine lining is thinnest at this point. During this procedure, the doctor inserts a catheter through the cervix and into the uterine catheter. Then, a balloon is filled to hold it in place. A special dye is injected into the uterus through the catheter, which shows up on the x-ray film.

HSG makes it easy to evaluate whether or not the fallopian tubes are patent - if there is blockage, the dye will not pass all the way through the fallopian tubes, but the dye will pass through fallopian tubes with no blockage. The codtor will ask you about allergies to shellfish, which contains iodine. Iodine has a potential to cause an allergic reaction in people who have become sensitized to the substance. Dr. Randy Morris would be happy to meet with you about your infertility.
